National Portfolio Day Reflection
Yesterday started out bad for me. I was extremely tired and annoyed at my parents for taking their time and leaving much later than I had wanted. Then, when we eventually arrived and had to walk completely around the building to find the end of the line, my frustration was at a boiling point. Finally after about an hour we got into the building.
I decided to wait in line for RISD first, since it is the only school in which I am interested that I have not yet personally met with a representative. After switching between their 6 lines for half an hour, I started to get antsy. I brought my sketchbook and Daily Art Journal as examples of non-photographic work, but my entire portfolio was on my flashdrive and I did not bring my laptop, due to its bulkiness and super short battery life. I figured that the reps would have their nice Apple laptops, as I have become so used to in our school, but that was not the case. I decided to ask one of the reps if they even had laptops, and she said no, since there was no power sources. My hopes for that day were shattered, and I gave up on fruitlessly waiting in line to join my parents over in the KCAI line. I told them to go over there since the presentation earlier in the week had greatly interested me in the school.
While waiting for about a half hour, I was happy that Jonah remembered me from his visit and I was even more happy when he took out his laptop! Even though we had a full portfolio review when he came to Wissahickon, I had since edited my portfolio with his advice in mind, which he was very excited about. He gave me further advice and said to keep in touch until February as my portfolio develops, but said that he accepted my portfolio as it was for now, and that further developement could put me in the running for a scholarship! This really made the whole day and all of my previous let downs worth it. I also got more information on KCAI and he spoke to my parents about the key elements of the school. Speaking with him again definitely solidified KCAI in my mind as a top school, if not the top school that I am applying to, along with SMFA. I considered waiting in line for SMFA, but since I have already visited the Museum school, had a portfolio review with a rep there, and Melissa is coming to Wissahickon today, I decided that it would be better to go get some satisfying lunch!
Despite the disappointing start, I am really glad at how the day turned out. I only wish I had gone a previous year, to at least have a grasp at what the event entailed and to have been better prepared for it. Still, even meeting with just one school had such a positive outcome that I would not have experienced otherwise. The encouraging and positive feedback I received from Jonah really made me excited and more confident for the rest of the application process, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out!
